Yosemite Name Changes
I doubt many people besides me or those affiliated with the park have been following this, but back in January I first heard about an insane proposal/lawsuit that apparently had to do with the trademarks to the names of the Ahwahnee, Curry Village, Yosemite Lodge, Badger Pass, and Wawona hotel. Delaware North, who runs many operations within the park, is the company that claims to own these trademarks. And they wanted to be paid $50 million in compensation in order to keep those names.
This rant is late, but a few weeks ago on the 1st was when the NPS gave in, and the name changes actually went through. I found this out by pulling up Google Maps at random, and literally the first thing I saw was: "THE MAJESTIC YOSEMITE HOTEL". What a time to be alive.
The Ahwahnee = The Majestic Yosemite Hotel
Curry Village = Half Dome Village
Yosemite Lodge = Yosemite Valley Lodge
Badger Pass = Yosemite Ski and Snowboard Area
Wawona hotel = Big Trees Lodge
Oh...that's fine. It's not like the old names have historical or cultural significance, or anything...
Was that really necessary? Has corporate greed come down to fighting over names? This is no better, if not worse, than deciding to change the names because they weren't politically correct.
Several sources have said these name changes may only be temporary, and that they are still trying to work out the problem. This is to prevent any major disruptions for visitors during the transition. Some people are still protesting and creating petitions, and hopefully at least one of those will convince the park to change back to the old names.
Anyway, the board names involving these locations in the RP are not going to change. I'm just not accepting it. The NPS really needs to get their **** together and fight to get those names back.
